Rhode Island Considers Pet Bird Law Changes - Exotic Pets - About ...

New bills have been proposed in Rhode Island that would give more options to pet bird owners and breeders.

Currently all psittacines (pet parrots) must be banded for identification but under the newly proposed state bill the birds would be allowed to be microchipped instead. This would make it easier for anyone to return a lost bird to their owner.

The other proposed bill would also allow pet bird owners that have birds infected with Parrot fever (psittacosis) to opt for either treatment or euthanasia. Right now owners must have their infected birds killed and burned.

Neither bill has been heard by the Senate Environment and Agriculture Committee or the House Committee yet but the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council urges it's members to contact the committee to show their support for the bills.
