AUGUSTA, Ga. Scientists have found at least one instance when the smaller sibling gets to call the shots and cancer patients may one day benefit.

The protein Chk1 has long been known to be a checkpoint in cell development: it keeps normal cells and damaged cells from dividing until their DNA has been fully replicated or repaired. Now scientists at Georgia Health Sciences University and the California Institute of Technology have discovered a shorter form they've dubbed Chk1-S ("S" stands for short) that essentially neutralizes its longer sibling so cell division can proceed.

That shorter form is in higher levels in cancer cells as well as fetal tissue, both of which require accelerated cell division. But the scientists also have shown that very high levels of Chk1-S actually reduce tumor growth and prompt premature cell division and death in other cells.

"Chk1 is needed for division of all cells, even cancer cells, so if you inhibit it completely by over-expressing Chk1-S, those cells also will not grow," said Dr. Navjotsingh Pabla, a postdoctoral fellow at Caltech. Chk1-S expression is nearly zero in normal, non-dividing cells.

These findings, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, point toward the short form's potential to help diagnose and/or treat cancer, they said. Chk1 inhibitors, which promote abnormal cell division and likely cell death to occur before DNA replication/repair is complete, already are being tested on patients.

"Chk1-S is only expressed at a time when DNA is replicated or repaired so it binds to its sibling protein, Chk1, antagonizing it so now the cell can divide," said Dr. Zheng Dong, cell biologist at GHSU and the Charlie Norwood Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Augusta. "The question that has been hanging on for many years is: How is Chk1 regulated?"

They found that significantly increasing levels of Chk1-S induces cell division regardless of whether DNA replication or repair is complete. Incomplete DNA replication or repair can result in spontaneous cell suicide but also can result in chromosomal or genetic defects leading to cancer cell production. Additionally, cancer cells purposefully mutate to resist treatment. Pabla speculates that expression of the shorter version may be awry in cancer cells. "We are very interested in pursuing that."

"It's exciting to have found an important regulator of such an important protein that we think may contribute to cancer as well as its treatment," Dong said.

Chk1 and Chk1-S are made by the same gene they are just spliced differently. One way Chk1 gets turned on is by phosphorylation, or adding phosphate, which can activate or deactivate a protein. The level of phosphorylation of Chk1 is particularly dramatic when DNA repair is needed. Chk1, in turn, works to temporarily halt the cell cycle by phosphorylating another protein. Interestingly, Chk1-S cannot bind to its sibling when Chk1 is phosphorylated. It's known that mental retardation can result from mutation of ATR, a DNA damage-sensing protein that phosphorylates Chk1.

While the biggest burst of cell division occurs during development, it continues lifelong in areas such as the blood, skin and gastrointestinal tract where cell turnover is high. "Lots of tissues need to regenerate," said Dong.

Trade union affiliated to Sri Lanka opposition demands salary hike

* Trade union affiliated to Sri Lanka opposition demands salary hike
Sat, Dec 31, 2011, 10:09 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 31, Colombo: The Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya (JSS), a trade union affiliated to Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) has threatened union action if salaries of employees attached to the electricity, water and petroleum sectors in the country are not raised.

Head of the JSS, UNP MP Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena says the union would be compelled to resort to trade union action if the government fails to grant a 45% salary increase in January to the workers engaged in the three sectors.

He said the salary increase should be made as the scheduled increment in their salaries every three years.

The MP noted that the 2012 budget has not offered any relief to the working masses in the country.

According to Dr. Jayawardena, the working people in the country needed to join forces to agitate for a rightful salary increase.

He also observed that the government was trying to re-introduce the controversial private sector pension scheme through an amendment to the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) Act.

Baseball Stuff I Got For Christmas

All throughout the year my wife insists that it's going to be a small Christmas. "Let's keep it simple, the kids don't need anything, we don't really need anything. We have debt to pay off."

I always heed her wisdom.

Then a couple weeks before Christmas she goes into flat-out gang-buster spend mode.

And I laugh and love her for it.

Aside from all the "necessities" like clothes and socks, and a couple other items like tools and such, here's the baseball stuff she got for me, most of which were stocking stuffers:

Once They Were Angels - Robert Goldman 2006
One of several books I've wanted for a long time. An Angels history book with interviews with some of the most well-known Angels.
Dig that old-time Nolan Ryan picture.Odd Man Out - Matt McCarthy 2009
Angels minor leaguer tell-all, supposedly. I'll take this one with a grain of salt. I know that many of the "facts" in this book have been challenged and many disproved or shown to be exagerated. But it's a must for the Angels library.Always An Angel - Tim Salmon 2010
How can an Angels collector not have a book by Tim Salmon. Now I do. This book has had a reserved space next to my Nolan Ryan books for the last year.
My two most favotorite Angels.

My wife also gave me an Amazon gift card in my stocking. There are several other books I've had on my want list for a while. Time to see if I can get some crossed off.

Next up- baseball cards.?

Two packs of 2011 Bowman Platinum and 2 packs of Bowman Chrome.
Nice cards but not a single Angel.
Blaster of 2011 Bowman Draft Picks and Prospects.? Nice cards but not a single Angel in the box.? Hmmm.

She did well though.? I was Toppsed-out so I put "No Topps, Bowman OK" on my Christmas list.

Be looking for a trade bait post coming soon.

Two?books of stamps for my TTM autograph requests.Mike Napoli Rangers jersey t-shirt.? Yes I actually asked for this.? I go to a lot of Ranger games, and only wear my Angels gear when the Angels are in town.? So I combined the 2 - Nap will always be an Angel in my heart.Baseball Activity Book - goes immediately to my toilet reading rack. Here's a puzzle for you all before this little book gets Red Flagged!

New Year's Day to come early as Samoa leaps ahead (Reuters)

CANBERRA (Reuters) ? If you are reading this on Friday you cannot be in Samoa.

Friday, December 30, has been cut this year for the tiny South Pacific island nation as it ditched a time-zone alliance with the United States and moved its time zone 24 hours ahead to catch up with Asia, New Zealand and Australia.

On New Year's Eve, Samoa will have jumped to the west of the international dateline, which runs zig-zags through the Pacific Ocean and broadly follows the 180 degree line of longitude, in a move Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi said would make it easier for Samoa to trade with key partners.

"No longer shall we have people ringing us up on Monday from New Zealand and Australia thinking it is Monday when we are closing our eyes and praying at churches. And vice versa on our Fridays when we ring up and already our contacts are holidaying on their Saturdays," he told Radio New Zealand on Friday.

"It will remove the enormous amount of confusion in our travel times for the Samoans and especially for the tourists who come to Samoa, who keep thinking of the New Zealand and Australian time zones."

Church bells will ring and carol services will herald the changeover time.

"I think the people are pretty calm about it, they are not expecting to have any major changes," said Samoa Observer newspaper editor Savea Sano Malifa.

To help win public support, the government declared employers must still pay workers for the missing Friday, although banks will not be allowed to charge interest for the lost day.

Countries are free to choose whether the dateline passes to the east or west, and Samoa's decision will mean all new maps will need to change.

The vast nation of China uses one national time zone while Australia is a mesh, particularly with summer daylight savings time that sees southern Adelaide city move from half an hour behind the eastern states to an hour in front of far northeastern Queensland.

But some tourism operators are worried Samoa will lose business by losing its position as the last place on earth to see the sunset each day, although it will now be one of the first places to see in each new day.

The nation's seventh Day Adventists are also divided over the change, and whether they should now observe the Sabbath on Saturday or Sunday.

The small former New Zealand dependency Tokelau, which has its administration in Samoa's capital Apia, is also changing datelines, while nearby American Samoa will continue to be on the other side of the dateline and will be a day behind.

Samoa, a country of about 180,000 people, used to be same time zone as New Zealand Australia but went back a day in 1892, celebrating July 4 twice and aligning itself with the United States.

The date change is not the first major change in Samoa in recent years. In 2009, the country switched to driving on the left hand side of the road from the right hand side, in line with New Zealand and Australia.

Samoa to skip Friday, lose December 30th 2011 forever

As China?s influence in the Pacific rises, Samoa is planning to cancel Friday, going directly from Thursday to Saturday, to synchronize trade with China.

Here?s a telling tidbit for those who bewail America?s declining influence in the world: Samoa is skipping Friday to get closer to China.

At midnight on Thursday, the Pacific island nation is doing the exact opposite of what it did in 1892, when it switched to the East of the international dateline and celebrated July 4 twice in order to fall more closely in line with Californian clocks. At the time, that made trading sense.

Today, though, ?we do a lot more business with New Zealand and Australia, China, and Pacific Rim countries,? said Samoan Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi earlier this year, announcing the change.
?
So Samoans, who currently live 20 miles east of the dateline, will go to sleep on Thursday night, skip Friday, and wake up on Saturday morning on the Asian side of the imaginary line. (American Samoa will stay where it is, timewise.)
?
The 24 hour leap into the future will make trade with East Asia ?far, far easier,? Mr. Tuilaepa said.
?
?They will lose the date of December 30th 2011 forever, but they will gain a lot of great business opportunities,? argued an article in Thursday?s edition of the ruling Chinese Communist party?s official organ, the People?s Daily.
?
?The strategic guideline behind this change means that China?s influence in the southern Asia Pacific area is rising,? suggested an accompanying commentary.
?
China?s trade with Samoa leaped from 13 million dollars in 2006 to 70 million dollars in 2010.
?
China has been on friendly terms with Samoa since the island became one of the first in the region to recognize the People?s Republic of China in 1975, although it opened an embassy in Beijing only in 2009. Last month the Chinese ambassador opened a shiny new Beijing-financed government building in the Samoan capital, Apia, the latest in a series of such projects.
