Relationship Advice You Don't Want (But Need)! | The Dangerous ...

Love-Wallpaper

Love is overrated! Whether admittedly or not we all subscribe to the cliched story of boy meets girl and they fall in love and live happily ever after. You know the story. Lucky for us, sooner or later the firm hand of realism slaps us in the face as we realize that ?love? is actually much more complicated than that.

I always wondered why friendships appear (in most cases at least) to be so much easier than relationships. Believe it or not, the best answer for me came from Kanye West, in his song with Jay Z ?No Church in the Wild? where he said ?love is cursed by monogamy?. However you feel about his brand of music, I think the man made a good point in that statement.

We can have multiple friends and the friends wouldn?t get jealous of each other (one should hope) but this rationale cannot be applied to relationships. The norm in relationships is to have one partner, and one partner only. Although the regular activities you perform with that partner are typically the same as those you perform with your friends apart from sex (in most cases anyway).

In addition to this I believe people jump into relationships too quickly. A friendship must be established in order for any relationship to stand a chance. My mother once told me

?Now you may be surrounded by friends, but when you get married it will just be you and your husband. On a long drive home you will need to be able to talk to him? about anything. If you find yourself scraping for a conversation or having to think twice about what you do or say, then why are you together? He must be your FRIEND?.

I?ve got to thank my mother for possibly the realest relationship advice I?ve gotten to date! According to research carried out by the Guardian, in 2010 34% of marriages were doomed to failure by the time they reached their 20th anniversary. Perhaps its because most couples don?t approach relationship as friends first?

Another very British dating trend is occurring ? couples have gradually decided not to get married all together. In 2012 5.9 million people were cohabiting in the UK, double the figure of cohabitation in 1996. Are people less into making commitments? Is marriage becoming less relevant? Are couples cohabiting rather than get married for economic reasons?

The real reason for this trend is a whole different topic for discussion in itself. Whats for sure is that social and economic pressures definitely influence our outlook on relationships, marriage, and commitment. However, the more appealing idea is that of Mr. Right and happily ever after.

So why jump at the idea of finding your superman without first figuring out whether or not you can fly (Katt Williams on Barack Obama). I say jog on to the nearest store and buy yourself a cape! You cannot help who you like but I believe falling in love is a choice. So the sooner we stop day dreaming and start looking at ?love? more realistically, the sooner we may actually have that 1950?s ?white picket fence? happiness.

Disable Java? Here's how, after US agency warns of software 'vulnerability.'

To prevent cyber crime, the Department of Homeland Security advises Americans to temporarily disable Java 7 software, commonly used in Web-browser programs.?

With an eye on the security of millions of Internet users, the US Department of Homeland Security is advising Americans to temporarily disable Java, a software commonly used in Web-browser programs.

It?s not that Java itself contains a malicious computer virus. The problem is what the agency calls a software ?vulnerability,? a kind of open door for hackers to infiltrate a computer. That can result in identity theft or other bad things happening on your computer.

?We are currently unaware of a practical solution to this problem,? said a notice released this week by CERT, a group sponsored by the Homeland Security Department?s cybersecurity division. The group is based at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.?

The recommendation highlights the rising threat level in the realm of cybersecurity, and the growing efforts to make devices and networks more secure. The vulnerability in Java is just one piece of that puzzle, but it?s significant because the software is so widely used in Web browsing.

If you want to follow CERT?s advice and disable Java, how do you do that?

First, if you use a Mac computer from Apple, the answer appears to be simple. According to reports by technology websites including MacRumors.com, Apple has already moved to force a disabling of Java on Macs with the OS X operating system.

For other computer users, a first step may be to check what version of Java you're running. The CERT announcements focus on Java 7. Computer-security blogger Brian Krebs notes some uncertainty about whether other versions going back to Java 4 are affected. But he points to evidence suggesting the problem is limited to version 7.

Oracle, the owner of Java, said on Twitter that the problem is limited to "JDK7," or version 7, and that it hopes to have a fix available "shortly." (JDK stands for Java Development Kit.)

You should use a WordPress for Realtors website for the Gen Y ...

You think the earth?s plates have enormous tectonic?shifts when earthquakes occur?

Wait until you get hit with the demographic shifts that are about to take place in your real estate market.

We talked before about the ?silver tsunami? of baby boomers who are retiring, an estimated 77 million of them leaving the workforce at a rate of 10,000 per day.

Well, guess who is going to replace them at the office? A huge bubble of Gen Yers, people born between the years 1979 and 1997.

In less than eight years from now, the workplace will flip from 50% baby boomers and 25% Gen Y workers to 50% Generation Y workers.

That means there will be a bubble of these people now making serious money in this country.

Are you prepared to market to them?

For example, some real estate agents and brokers might still scoff at the use of social media and posting on Facebook and Twitter. They are probably not seeing huge returns on the investment of their time.

That all changes with Gen Yers. These people were RAISED on Facebook and Twitter ? it?s in their DNA.

Going to the park to walk the dog? Let your friends know on Facebook. Ate a tasty sandwich. Tweet it.

In fact, they have already moved on to the next big things with Pinterest, LinkedIn, and a preference for messages via videos on You Tube.

Computers, that?s old school. It?s ALL mobile with them.

Ever sat down to dinner with a Gen Yer? During the meal, the conversation is between you, them and whoever they are texting.

These people are technologists. There were practically born with computerized circuitry in their veins.

They are going to start making serious money. They are going to start buying houses.

What are you doing to appeal to them?

The first thing you had better do is make sure your web site is wired for 2013, not 2003. That means a site that you can change quickly, optimize for search engines easily AND feed posts to all those outlets out via RSS, Twitter, Facebook, etc.

The best way to do that today is with a WordPress real estate site created specifically for brokers and agents.

Why WordPress?

How?s this for validation? In the NAR 2011 Realtor Technology Survey Report, they asked what were the most valuable technology tools Realtors started using in the past 12 months. WordPress was one of them.

Real estate agents are learning that WordPress sites are the website of choice when it comes to owning a site that is able to service the rapid pace of change in today?s marketplace.

You can?t wait a week for your webmaster to make changes on your site. You can?t wait until whenever when you need to update listings on your site.

GenYers operate at one speed ? NOW.

Now is the time to start preparing for this generation. Gen Xers (born between 1965 and 1978) are also still out there and will be coming into higher incomes as well. And, they too are wired big time.

It?s seems pretty darn evident ? get your website up to speed. The techno-saavy, high-speed generations are about to take over.

Geonaute's 360 degree sports camera catches all the action, even our hands on

Sport and action cameras are big business, and even though there are a couple of main players, it doesn't stop other's trying to get a bite of the apple. Geonaute, however, have come at the situation from a different angle. Heck, they're coming at it from every angle, with its 360-degree offering. Equipped with three 8-megapixel wide-angle lenses the camera captures an almost spherical field of view. This might initially sound like a strange idea... after all, who wants all of that in one video, won't it all be warped beyond recognition? The short answer is no, in fact it's much better than you would ever have thought, and we'll explain why shortly. Going back to the camera itself, it looks a little like the innards of those security cameras you find in government buildings etc that peer at you ominously. However, in this case, the three lenses have color detail around them which makes them look anything but sinister, and the circular base section might look a little large, but in fact it's light in the hand -- and actually helps it sit quite comfortably atop a helmet.

In 360 video mode the advertised resolution is up to 2,048 x 1,024. In photo mode you'll get single shot, burst and time-lapse modes with a top resolution of 4,096 x 2,048. The actual FOV is 360 degrees on the horizontal, and 150 degrees vertically, but the end result is a fairly complete viewing sphere. The 3,000 mAh battery should be good for two hours of footage, and the microSD card slot will take cards of up to 32GB. While there is a waterproof housing, the camera itself will take the elements on pretty well thanks to its IPX7 rating. Read on after the break for more impressions.

slideshow At exactly 8 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 7, the announcement came over the school intercom, ?We're looking forward to a great day at Ringgold Middle School.?

And with that, for the first time since the April 2011 tornado that ripped through the city, the middle school was whole again. This was the day the eighth-graders were welcomed back as their new wing was complete. As Catoosa County superintendent of schools Denia Reese said, ?This is last piece of major disaster recovery construction to be rebuilt after the tornado.?

The 42,000-square-foot wing completes the middle school and contains 14 new classrooms and three science labs. It is not just for the eighth-graders, who had only begun their middle school careers at the time of the disaster, but all of the school's 750 students will get use out of the rooms for band, art and computer classes, according to Reese.

Doug Suits, the school system?s director of facilities, said the building is extremely energy-efficient, easy to heat and cool.

?The middle school (students) especially like the mall atmosphere the new wing conveys.?

The hallways are wide and open, with high ceilings. The chorus room is especially nice, with a wall of windows facing the outside.

Oil up as China trade, US earnings show recovery

BANGKOK (AP) ? Oil prices rose Thursday, propelled by a rebound in China's trade growth and an encouraging start to the U.S. corporate earnings season.

Benchmark crude for February delivery was up 55 cents to $93.65 per barrel at late afternoon Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract slipped 5 cents to end at $93.10 per barrel in New York on Wednesday on the heels of rising U.S. crude supplies.

Data released Thursday showed China's export growth in December more than quadrupled from the previous month's level to 14 percent. Imports rose 6 percent, after failing to grow at all in November, in a sign of increasing domestic demand.

The data was a boost for energy prices, since a pickup in economic activity in the world's second-largest economy could boost demand for oil.

In the U.S., corporate reporting season began with better-than-expected results. That helped lift stocks on Wall Street and in Asia, and energy prices tailgated on the gains.

Brent crude, used to price international varieties of oil, was up $1.02 to $111.89 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline added 2 cents at $2.799 a gallon.

? Heating oil rose 3.4 cents to $3.104 a gallon.

? Natural gas was up 2.6 cents to $3.139 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Senate pay produces howls of GOP outrage

Just two days into a new legislative session, bipartisanship took a hit as the Senate DFL majority voted to cut the pay of some Republican staffers.

Republicans say some salaries for their staffers will be reduced by as much as 40 percent -- more than they say could be justified by the GOP's new minority status.

"They appear to be partisan. They appear to be punitive," said Senate Minority Leader David Hann, R-Eden Prairie. The outcry is a near-mimic of the outrage Democrats expressed when Republicans, then in the majority, cut DFL staffing budgets last year.

Senate Majority Leader Tom Bakk, DFL-Cook, said Thursday's actions were fair and had nothing to do with payback for how poorly he felt DFL staffing needs were treated under GOP control.

Instead, he said the new salary levels pay staffers commensurate with their Senate experience, as has been Senate custom. He said when Republicans were in charge they put people "willy nilly" into salary categories that made no sense given their level of experience.

The pay rates were passed by the Minnesota Senate Rules Committee Thursday on a partisan vote.

Soon after, the GOP took its complaint from the little-watched Rules Committee to the Senate floor, as Republican after Republican stood up to complain.

"You can come after me all you want, but don't come after our staff," pleaded Sen. Michelle Benson, R-Ham Lake.

Bakk said the new pay rates were needed because "there's a gorilla in the room and it's the lawsuit against this state Senate that was brought on by behavior of members of your caucus."

The lawsuit was brought by the Republican Senate's former communications director, Michael Brodkorb. He was fired after having an affair with then-Senate Majority Leader Amy Koch, leading to her resignation from leadership. Legal fees in that case are $200,000 so far.

Sen. Scott Newman, R-Hutchinson, said Bakk should recuse himself from voting because his wife, Laura Bakk, is a senate legislative assistant and will be paid $68,561, one of the top committee staff salaries. "I think it is inappropriate for a senator to vote on an issue that is directly beneficial to them for financial purposes," Newman said after the meeting.

Laura Bakk started in the House in 1975 and moved to the Senate in 1997, according to Senate spokesman Amos Briggs. Sen. Bakk was first elected in 1994.

Newman also questioned whether Faye Sparks, who will be paid $68,723 as committee administrator, is related to DFL Sen. Dan Sparks. Faye Sparks is Dan Sparks' mother. She has been a senate employee since 1991, more than 10 years before her son was elected.

Valve engineer explains Steambox comments: 'No current plans to announce anything in 2013'

When Valve hardware engineer Ben Krasnow gave a speech at a German technology conference back in December, he spoke to the much ballyhooed "Steambox" concept we've been hearing so much about in recent months (among other, vastly different subjects). Following that speech, a report on Golem.de (translated at the Neogaf gaming forums) posited that Krasnow indicated a reveal of said Steambox at this March's Game Developer's Conference, or perhaps at this June's E3 gaming trade show -- but Krasnow tells us he didn't say that exactly. "With regards to the Steambox news -- there has been a lot of things stated in the media which I didn't say. For example, it's true that we are working on getting Steam into the living room, and are planning for a hardware box, but we have no current plans to announce anything in 2013," Krasnow said in an email.

"The box might be linux-based, but it might not," he continued. "It's true that we are beta-testing Left for Dead 2 on Linux, and have also been public about Steam Big Picture Mode. We are also working on virtual and augmented reality hardware, and also have other hardware projects that have not been disclosed yet, but probably will be in 2013."

Valve also chimed in with a boilerplate statement, which explained the company's presence at this week's big consumer electronics show. "Yes, Valve will be at the show to meet with hardware and content developers in our booth space. Many PCs optimized for Steam and Big Picture will be shipping later this year. We are bringing some of these as well as some custom HW prototypes to our CES meetings." We saw one such example of a PC optimized for use with Steam's Big Picture Mode last night in Xi3's Piston modular PC -- the first of many of these setups we expect to see in 2013. Valve continued, "These custom prototypes are low-cost, high performance designs for the living room that also incorporate Steam and Big Picture. We will be sharing more information to the press and public in the coming months."

Couple dead, boy among injured in Mass. condo fire

CHELMSFORD, Mass. (AP) ? Fire tore through a northeastern Massachusetts condominium building, killing a couple in their late 60s or early 70s and injuring four of their relatives, including a 7-year-old boy who suffered serious burns, the state's fire marshal said Sunday.

The fire in Chelmsford began at about 11 p.m. Saturday. State Fire Marshal Stephen said he believes the fire started accidentally in the couple's home on the top floor of the four-story building, one of several in the complex.

The victims' names haven't been released. Coan said the man who died used a wheelchair, which impeded efforts to get him out of the condo.

Fire officials said two adults and two children related to the couple were visiting them when the fire began. The boy was flown by helicopter to a Boston hospital to be treated for serious burns, while the others were taken to local hospitals. The boy's condition wasn't available Sunday.

Coan said firefighters rescued several other residents of the top floor from their balconies.

Michael Schwartz told The Lowell Sun that he and his wife were watching a movie in their bedroom when they heard a commotion, saw the fire trucks and smelled smoke.

"We couldn't get out because the whole hallway was filled with smoke," Schwartz said. "We had to be rescued over the balcony."

Coan said the cause of the fire was being investigated.

It was the third fatal fire in Massachusetts since Friday. Accidental fires killed a 70-year-old man in Winchendon on Friday evening and a 15-year-old girl in Holyoke on Saturday, officials said.

10 banks agree to pay $8.5B for foreclosure abuse

(AP) ? Ten major banks agreed Monday to pay $8.5 billion to settle federal complaints that they wrongfully foreclosed on homeowners who should have been allowed to stay in their homes.

The banks, which include JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo, will pay billions to homeowners to end a review process of foreclosure files that was required under a 2011 enforcement action. The review was ordered because banks mishandled people's paperwork and skipped required steps in the foreclosure process.

The settlement was announced jointly by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the Federal Reserve.

Separately, Bank of America agreed Monday to pay $10.3 billion to government-backed mortgage financier Fannie Mae to settle claims related to mortgages that soured during the housing crash.

The agreements are the banks' latest step toward eliminating hundreds of billions of dollars in potential liabilities related to the housing crisis that crested in 2008. When they release fourth-quarter earnings later this month, the banks hope to reassure investors that they are making progress toward addressing those so-called legacy claims.

But advocates say the foreclosure deal allows banks to escape responsibility for damages that might have cost them much more. Regulators are settling at too low a price and possibly at the expense of the consumer, they say.

"This was supposed to be about compensating homeowners for the harm they suffered," said Diane Thompson, a lawyer with the National Consumer Law Center. The payout guidelines already allowed wronged homeowners less compensation than the actual damages to them, she said.

Under the settlement, people who were wrongfully foreclosed on could receive from $1,000 up to $125,000. Failing to offer someone a loan modification would be considered a lighter offense; unfairly seizing and selling a person's home would entitle that person to the biggest payment, according to guidelines released last summer by the OCC.

The agreement covers up to 3.8 million people who were in foreclosure in 2009 and 2010. All will receive some amount of compensation. That's an average of $2,237 per homeowner, although the payouts are expected to vary widely.

About $3.3 billion would be direct payments to borrowers, regulators said. Another $5.2 billion would pay for other assistance including loan modifications.

The companies involved in the settlement also include: Citigroup, MetLife Bank, PNC Financial Services, Sovereign, SunTrust, U.S. Bank and Aurora. The 2011 action also included GMAC Mortgage, HSBC Finance Corp. and EMC Mortgage Corp.

The deal "represents a significant change in direction" from the original, 2011 agreements, Comptroller of the Currency Thomas Curry said in a statement.

Banks and consumer advocates had complained that the loan-by-loan reviews required under the 2011 order were time consuming and costly without reaching many homeowners. Banks were paying large sums to consultants who were reviewing the files. Some questioned the independence of those consultants, who often ruled against homeowners.

Curry said the new deal meets the original objectives "by ensuring that consumers are the ones who will benefit, and that they will benefit more quickly and in a more direct manner."

"It has become clear that carrying the process through to its conclusion would divert money away from the impacted homeowners and also needlessly delay the dispensation of compensation to affected borrowers," Curry said.

Thompson agreed that the earlier review process was deeply flawed and said the move toward direct payments is a positive development. But she said the deal will only work if it includes strong oversight and transparency provisions.

"It's another get out of jail free card for the banks," said Thompson. "It caps their liability at a total number that's less than they thought they were going to pay going in."

Citigroup said in a statement that the bank is "pleased to have the matter resolved" and believes the agreement "will provide benefits for homeowners." Citi expects to record a charge of $305 million in the fourth quarter of 2012 to cover its cash payment under the settlement. The bank expects that existing reserves will cover its $500 million share of the non-cash foreclosure aid.

Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan said the agreements were "a significant step" in resolving the bank's remaining legacy mortgage issues while streamlining the company and reducing future expenses.

Leaders of a House oversight panel asked regulators for a briefing on the proposed settlement on Friday. Regulators refused to brief Congress before announcing the deal publicly.

Maryland Congressman Elijah Cummings, the top Democrat on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, said in a statement that he was "deeply disappointed" in the regulators' actions.

"I have serious concerns that this settlement may allow banks to skirt what they owe and sweep past abuses under the rug without determining the full harm borrowers have suffered," Cummings said. He said regulators have failed to answer key questions about how the settlement was reached, who will get the money and what will happen to others who were harmed by these banks but were not included in the settlement.

The settlement is separate from a $25 billion settlement between 49 state attorneys general, federal regulators and five banks: Ally, formerly known as GMAC; Bank of America; Citigroup; JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo.

Relationship & Mental Health Issues | Ask the Therapist

I?ve suffered from depression from a very young age?pill overdose at 14 and mh hospitalization at 21. All of my ?relationships? until now have been of a sexual nature and I have been very promiscuous since losing my virginity at 23. I?ve had about 20 partners, most of them as a result of prostituting myself?at 26 and at 30 years of age. I?ve felt like I?ve lived a double life for so long. Despite it all, I?ve managed to get myself in graduate school this year; ironically, I?m going for my MSW. I have been living with my current?and the only person I consider a ?legitimate??boyfriend for a year but dating for two. I question the authenticity or the healthiness of my relationship with my partner because he was initially my ?john.? Needless-to-say, I have a lot of insecurities around his faithfulness. We have a lot of problems because I feel he?s not affectionate enough towards me and I?m always seeking validation. I love his family and he loves mine but I don?t know if he?s the one. I think he?s a great guy but I also think he?s as good as I?ll be able to do because no one else would accept me with my past. He?s a typical guy in every sense of the word and gets easily frustrated when we talk about ?feelings and emotions.? He thinks our relationship is fine?and for the most part it is?and says I just can?t help but self-sabotage. He?s perhaps the only person that knows EVERYTHING about me?I told him about my depression, he obviously knows about the prostitution?but he uses it against me when we have arguments. I want to make this relationship work but I don?t know if it?s because the only one I?ve ever really had or because I think I?m in love. My PCP, who knows my mh history seeing since I was a teenager, suspects I have Cyclothymia and encouraged me to get professional help. Needless-to-say, I?ve been lackadaisical about it. Sometimes I feel like I want to run away from everything because no one will ever understand me but I also feel like I want to try to get better. I?m confused about my relationship and I wonder how much my mh instability is affecting my expectations? Or am I really asking for too much?

A: First I want you to know how much I admire your courage for pulling yourself together and making it into graduate school. MSW programs are not easy to get into and the fact that you want to use your evolution to help others is to be celebrated. People who have recovered from life?s hurts almost always make good therapists.

Let?s not, as the ?60s slang phrase goes, push the river. So far you have been systematically evolving and resilient in making changes in your life. You are having more of what you want and less of what you don?t want. This means your life is moving in the right direction. Someone who self-sabotages is typically ambivalent about their circumstance ? so if this is your concern, keep talking about what you want and don?t want in a relationship. Clarity is the antidote for staying in an ambivalent situation. If you keep moving toward clarity the risk of sabotage goes down.

I am assuming you are already in therapy, but if not I would encourage you to use the services at the graduate school you are attending. This will help with the process of clarifying.

Wishing you patience and peace,
Dr. Dan

Trakdot Luggage hands-on: find your lost bags

Trakdot Luggage handson find your lost bags

Lost luggage is a seemingly unavoidable inevitability for the frequent traveller. Millions of bags either get left behind, sent to the wrong city or simply disappear completely every year. GlobaTrac has created Trakdot Luggage to give the constant flyer a little more of a sense of security. The palm-sized plastic device slips discreetly into your duffle or suitcase and updates the owner on its location via an app, SMS, email or the Trakdot website. Sadly the apps are not live in Play or the iTunes app store, so we can't tell you much about their functionality, outside of some specialized alerts that are promised, like a notification when your bag hits the claim carrosel. On the site you can set up customized text and email notifications or view location pins via Google Maps.

The preproduction box we handled was stunningly light, though we wouldn't be surprised if the device packed on a little weight when the final version hits shelves in March. Rather than rely on battery draining GPS, the Trakdot Luggage relies on a quad-band GSM chip and triangulation, which allows it to last up to two weeks on a fresh pair of AAs, which are generously included in the packaging. The Trakdot luggage will $49.95, though a one time activation fee of $8.99 and an annual service fee of $12.99 will be required to keep it functional. Check out the gallery below and the PR after the break for more.

Using Personal Development To Become A Better You

TIP! Avoid the temptation to comfort yourself with a shopping spree. If you practice something you like instead of shopping, you will not spend a lot of money and get into debt.

You should always work on your own self improvement. You may want to develop a healthier lifestyle or less damaging spending habits. You need to work to better yourself. Self improvement should be an ongoing process, since we all have room for improvement in our lives. You can lead a healthy and happy life by establishing and continuing good spending habits.

TIP! Evaluate yourself and seek out that one aspect that you wish to change or improve. There are probably many things that you are wanting to change, but focusing on one will make success more likely.

A positive attitude is key to personal growth. If you do not have a good attitude you will never get as far as you could have. Instead, let go of negative thinking. Make a choice everyday to look on the positive side of things and watch your goal progression improve.

TIP! You need to have an emergency fund. It?s common for us to add even more charges to our already overtaxed credit cards whenever an unforeseen expense arises, no matter how large or small.

A great personal development tip is to always use love to fuel your faith. Faith is meaningless without love. You cannot consider your faith satisfactory if you do nothing to express it. Love yourself and the people around you, and reach out to do good for the people who need it the most.

The true path to personal development is one of consciously choosing beneficial change. You have to choose and accept the change in order to grow.

TIP! Try and find new ways to challenge yourself. When you face a challenge, you can find more possibilities in life.

Are you a heavy alcohol drinker? Do you smoke or participate in other actives that can harm your body? Our body is a temple, and therefore it should be treated like one. If you are serious about improving your life, it is important to eliminate the habits which cause your body harm. Analyze your life and habits, and make a point to cut out any habits that are not good for you or your body.

TIP! Your body?s health and your mental health are two sides of the same coin, and each has a close effect on the other. Make sure you treat your body properly: follow a healthy diet and exercise regularly.

Since nobody?s perfect, you?re going to fall off your diet plan sometimes and eat junk food instead of a healthy meal. Stress can be just as detrimental to your health as a sugary meal, so keep that fact in mind, and try to relax.

TIP! In order to be properly motivated toward personal development goals, it is important to admit how much you do not know. When you realize your place in the universe, you realize that you have a lot to learn.

Understand that there is a divide between where you are and where you wish to go. In order to improve yourself, you first have to come to that realization. Without a clear understanding of exactly where you need to go, the process of achieving your self improvement goals will be long and frustrating.

TIP! Make a decision about where you want to go in life and stick with it. Daydreaming about an ideal life is not going to take you anywhere.

By taking care of your physical health, you will be helping every area of personal development. Exercise regularly, get adequate sleep every night and enjoy a healthy diet to help you continue your personal growth. It may seem simple, but sometimes the simplest things in life are actually the most difficult.

TIP! Your own personal development goals need to be specific so that they can help pave the road towards success. If you have more tangible goals in mind, you?ll be able to better resolve how you might accomplish them.

It may become discouraging to begin developing better personal habits and lifestyles, but once you start noticing your life developing towards a better future, you will never want to stop. You can always develop better ways to do things and it?s important to always try hard towards any personal development goals you have.

French actor Depardieu gets Russian passport

MOSCOW (AP) ? French actor Gerard Depardieu has received a Russian passport after flying to Russia for a late night dinner with President Vladimir Putin.

Depardieu sought Russian citizenship as part of his battle against a proposed super tax on millionaires in France, and Putin granted his request last week.

Russian television showed Putin embracing the actor as he arrived late Saturday at the president's residence in Sochi, the host city of the 2014 Winter Olympics. The two men were then shown chatting over supper, discussing a soon-to-be-released film in which Depardieu plays Russian monk Grigory Rasputin.

Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, confirmed on Sunday that Depardieu was given his new Russian passport.

French President Francois Hollande plans to raise the tax on earned income above ?1 million ($1.3 million) to 75 percent from the current 41 percent, while Russia has a flat 13-percent tax rate.

Popular Culture 20130104: The Electric Light Orchestra - Docudharma

ELO 2 was released in the UK on Harvest in either January or February (depending on the source) of 1973, and in the US in March of that year on United Artists. ?It charted at at #35 in the UK and at #52 in the US, not particularly auspicious, but not horrible either. ?By the way, the UA release was called Electric Light Orchestra II.

The personnel performing were significantly different from the first album, and are as follows:

Mike de Albuquerque (19470624 and still with us) - Bass, backing vocals

Bev Bevan (19451124 and also still with us) - Drums, percussion

Mike Edwards (19480531 - 20100903) - Cello

Wilfred Gibson (19450228 and still with us) - Violin

Jeff Lynne (19471230 and still with us) - Vocals, guitar, Moog synthesizer

Richard Tandy (19480326 and still with us) - Keyboards, Moog synthesizer

Colin Walker (14499798 and still with us) - Cello

In addition, the former band member and cofounder was also on the record in two pieces:

Roy Wood (19461108 and still with us) - Bass, Cello on tracks 1 and 4

Note that this iteration of the band was heavy in cello, and that became their signature sound. ?The album was produce by Lynne.

The first track is called "In Old England Town (Boogie No. 2)", written by Lynne. ?I not not really get it, because that is now what I think of a boogie, but it sort of sets the theme for subsequent sounds from the band, especially Lynne's interesting and distorted voice. ?First the lyrics:

Down, down, you can see them all
rising gaily to the top
keep on rising babe you know you got a long drop
you better cling cos it's the done thing

Down, down, at the Policemans Ball
They're all dancing in a line
keep on gruntin boys you know you're doin fine
come quickly I've been strangled

Down, down, at the Military
they're all marching round and round
keep them boots shined and that still upper lip down
Ablution Revolution

Down, down, at the launching pad
giant phallus stands erect
ten thousand tons of waste throb then eject
look out space, we're gonna change our place

Down, down, in old England Town
there was air and now there's smoke
let's build more cars and drive away before we choke
suddenly it's always night time

Down, down, at that nice Trade Fair
all the money gone astray
let's inflate this price and float away
just you and me and everyone...

Here is a live version:

I find it sort of ponderous with little meaning, but that might just be me.

The second song, also written by Lynne, is called "Momma". ?It is quite poignant.

She came up from the country with a smile for everyone
she left her blue horizon just to find another home
a lonely girl who'd travelled many days
a lonely heart that could not find a way

[chorus:]
and she said Momma, it's a hard life now you're gone
Momma, it's so hard to carry on
and I feel I'm a fool who lost it all
you used to make it all so very clear
that life must go on though the end is near
oh Momma, it's a sad and lonely life

A misty morning rider she came wandering through the hills
a wanderin soul appearin over rainy window sills
a loser in her heart, but in her face
a smile for everyone under God's grace

[chorus]

Midnight maiden madness, what to search for in this place
gateway to the city, night sky shadows on her face
a lady lost in nowhere but her stare
leaves the world, her life to start somewhere

[chorus]

This is a wonderful song. ?I miss my mum, and several recent events have made me think about her, not the least being that Christmas was her favorite time of year.

The third and last track on Side One is probably the best cover of Chuck Berry's "Roll Over Beethoven" that has ever been made. ?This is what got the band on the charts, and it is really pretty wonderful.

Gonna write a little letter gonna mail it to me local D.J.
it's a jumpin little record I want my jockey to play
Roll Over Beethoven, gotta hear it again today

My temperature's risin, the juke box's blowin a fuse
My heart's beatin a rhythm, singin out rhythm and blues
Roll Over Beethoven, they're rockin in two by two

Well if you feel you like it, go get your lover and reel and rock it
roll it over and move on up now, go for cover and reel and rock it
roll it over, Roll Over Beethoven, tell Tchaikovsky the news

Early in the mornin I'm a givin you the warnin,
don't you step on my blue suede shoes
hey diddle diddle gonna play my fiddle,
I ain't got nothing to lose
Roll Over Beethoven, tell Tchaikovsky the news

She wiggles like a glow-worm, dances like a spinning top
she got a crazy partner, you should have seen her reel and rock
long as she got a dime, the music will never stop

Well if you feel you like it, go get your lover and reel and rock it
roll it over and move on up now, go for cover and reel and rock it
roll it over, Roll Over Beethoven, dig these rhythm and blues

Roll Over Beethoven, Roll Over Beethoven,
Roll Over Beethoven, Roll Over Beethoven,
Roll Over Beethoven, dig these rhythm and blues?

I really like how it starts, and how the real strings are used in it. ?This song was the one that propelled them to the charts. ?At #9 in the UK and #42 in the US, it did well.

Berry really did well with the song, making references to classical and modern (at the time) works, viz. Perkins's "Blue Suede Shoes". ?This is a rock classic, and the band did a good job with it.

Side two starts out with the Lynne song "From the Sun to the World (Boogie No. 1)". ?This is a strange song, but I like it.

Listen to me sister, I got news from the governor,
and he's heard people shouting from the towers in the city
while their babies grow in test tubes over night

Run and fetch the priest cos there's a light on in the building
and there's sounds blowin out in the music of the night
and we should try to get the people out alive

Movin 'cross the ocean with the flag of death a'flyin
the demon butcher pointin out the message on the tide
and the demon light a'sailin at his side

Stormin down the airwaves comes the protest and the prayin
and the love that shone down from the sun to world
no longer could support the life it gave

It seems like some convoluted social comment, from everything from in vitro fertilization to the Viet Nam war to protest music. ?This one does sound much more like a boogie than the boogie on the first side.

I was also able to find a very nice live version of it:

This is really well done, considering how complex the music is and how many people were trying to play at once. ?It is a very nice effort. ?The guitar sounds to me in some places very much like Richie Blackmore on the Mark I iteration of Deep Purple, and that was a pretty good band about which I have written before.

The second and last track on the second side is the Lynne number "Kuiama", about Viet Nam atrocities.

My My Kuiama, she came in the morning
she smiled but the tears on her little face
showed the pain that had been in that far off place
so sad, treated so bad

My My Kuiama, don't break your heart tryin
to say how your ma and your pa passed away
and they left you to wander the ruin and decay
real mean, that bullet machine

See here Kuiama, now ten thousand miles
is a long long way and you're here today
and you won't go back so you might say
hello, how do you do

Kuia stop your cryin, there's no bombs a'fallin
no horsemen in the night a'ridin through your dreams and tearing at your life
baby goodnight

No more silver rain will hit your ground
and no more guns will sound
and no more life be drowned
No more trenches where the soldiers lie
and no more people die
beneath that big black sky

Wake up Kuiama, I got somethin to tell you
it's just that I mean, well that is to say,
that I'm trying to explain but I'll start again,
for you, I must be true.

Kuia in this country, they got rules with no reason
they teach you to kill and they send you away
with your gun in your hand, you pick up your pay
so cool, that no mercy tool

Kuia please believe me? I just couldn't help myself.
I wanted to run but they gave me a gun
and they told me the duty I owed to my Fatherland.
I made my stand.

Kuia I just shot them, I just blew their heads open,
and I heard them scream in their agony
Kuiama she waits there for me
True blue, you saw it through.

This, my friends, in a masterpiece and should singlehandly be enough to seal the place in ELO in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. ?Eligible since 1997, they have not yet been inducted. ?That is a shame, because they are more deserving than some of the acts already inducted, at least in my opinion.

Here is a decent live version. ?The embed code returns the wrong song, but this link works.

Now some thoughts about this album. ?By the time that ELO2 was released, Lynne was completely in control of the band both artistically and administratively. ?The musical style is obviously influenced by The Beatles (Lynne had met them in 1968) but so were a LOT of other bands at the time. ?I would never go as far as some critics and say the Lynne was imitating them, but rather taking some of the more innovative elements of their music and adapting them for the unique sound of ELO.

I think that this is much better effort than the debut album, and was a harbinger of even better things to come. ?Some things that I find of interest is the intentional use of distortion of Lynne's vocals, because any recording engineer would not allow a voice to be distorted like that by accident. ?In many ways it adds to the effect, but does get a bit old now and then.

Research that I have done indicates that this record was originally to be a concept album called The Lost Planet, but that was dropped after Roy Wood left the band. ?I can find little or no connexion betwixt that album title and the science fiction novel by Angus MacVicar (made into a movie serial) of the same name, but may be overlooking something.

I like this album a lot, and some of their subsequent work even better. ?However, except for a few rare gems like "Kuiama", their music does not "grab" me like music by The Who or The Moody Blues. ?I guess what I am trying to say is that, while I like their music fine, I do not have nearly as strong an emotional bond with their than I have with the other two bands just mentioned. ?As a matter of fact, the songs by The Electric Light Orchestra are the light, even funny ones, not their serious stuff.

Speaking about The Who, on BBC America tonight at 10:00 Eastern there is a documentary about the making of Quadrophenia, and at midnight some video of live performances by them. ?I shall watch them as I field comments, since I have no place to go tonight and choose to spend the evening with my friends here, my readers.

Warmest regards,

Doc, aka Dr. David W. Smith

Induction of adult cortical neurogenesis by an antidepressant

Induction of adult cortical neurogenesis by an antidepressant [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 4-Jan-2013

The production of new neurons in the adult normal cortex in response to the antidepressant, fluoxetine, is reported in a study published online this week in Neuropsychopharmacology.

The research team, which is based at the Institute for Comprehensive Medical Science, Fujita Health University, Aichi, has previously demonstrated that neural progenitor cells exist at the surface of the adult cortex, and, moreover, that ischemia enhances the generation of new inhibitory neurons from these neural progenitor cells. These cells were accordingly named "Layer 1 Inhibitory Neuron Progenitor cells" (L1-INP). However, until now it was not known whether L1-INP-related neurogenesis could be induced in the normal adult cortex.

Tsuyoshi Miyakawa, Koji Ohira, and their colleagues employed fluoxetine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, and one of the most widely used antidepressants, to stimulate the production of new neurons from L1-INP cells. A large percentage of these newly generated neurons were inhibitory GABAergic interneurons, and their generation coincided with a reduction in apoptotic cell death following ischemia. This finding highlights the potential neuroprotective response induced by this antidepressant drug. It also lends further support to the postulation that induction of adult neurogenesis in cortex is a relevant prevention/treatment option for neurodegenerative diseases and psychiatric disorders.
