Chicago New Home Remodeling Will Make a Comeback in 2013

chicago new homes remodelingDo you have any major remodeling projects planned for your Chicago new home?

Harvard?s Joint Center for Housing studies recently predicted that home improvement spending will see double-digit growth in the first half of 2013. By the second quarter of next year, homeowner spending on remodeling is expected to rise from its current annual rate of $115.1 billion to $134.2 billion by the second quarter of next year.

The Center for Housing predicts remodeling rates based on the following factors: housing starts, pending home sales, remodeling employment rates and statistics on the number of household products and materials ordered by suppliers and manufacturers.

The National Association Association of Home Builders Remodeling Index has also increased and reached a level of 50, which means that remodelers are seeing more business than earlier in 2012.

Both Lowe?s and Home Depot have also experienced high revenue growth in recent years. Lowe?s gross earnings in 2012 are at $50.21 billion and Home Depot has gross earnings of $70.4 billion. In spite of the recession, both home improvement stores have fared extremely well.

  • But as we?ve said before, experience is what matters most on a mobile device, not whiz-bang specs. And in that regard, Apple certainly shines.

  • Sixty-two percent of parents surveyed said they would buy their child a mobile device if it would be used for academic purposes.

"Many parents, teachers and administrators are now mobile device users themselves, which has increased their appreciation and understanding for how these devices can support and enhance learning," said Julie Evans, chief executive officer of Project Tomorrow.

  • "It?s that last part that intrigues me, however. I know that many, many families and schools will be hard-pressed to digest even the 16 GB Wi-Fi model at $329 in K-12 -- ?educational discounts notwithstanding. As we know, Mr. Cook likes to brag about how well the iPads are doing in schools, but two factors remain missing: a really affordable price and strong corporate initiatives in the K-12 marketplace. Is Apple missing an opportunity?"

  • The next wave of that impact won't come from iBooks 3 or the new version of iBooks Author, which are both nice, but relatively minor updates. If anything from Tuesday's event will help push digital textbook adoption forward, it's the hardware. Specifically, the iPad Mini. By offering a $329 tablet, Apple suddenly made iPad adoption notably more affordable for cash-strapped school districts. Apple also released the fourth generation 10-inch iPad, which should help drive down the price of the company's older devices as well.?

  • Tim Cook said there are 2,500 classrooms using iBooks textbooks right now, which Madan says is still a relatively small number. He does expect, however, for that to increase in the coming years. As schools allocate money to set up computer labs with limited funds, many find they can do it for less with iPads. The ?computer lab? has become the ?iPad lab? and the lower price of the iPad mini helps even more.

'Don't Trust The B---- In Apartment 23' Premiere: Mark-Paul Gosselaar Gives James Van Der Beek An Intervention (VIDEO)

Same "B----," new time slot. ABC is pairing "Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23" with "Happy Endings" to create a Tuesday night comedy block. But the new night is the only change evident on "Apartment 23" -- though June seemed convinced sadness has cost her a full cup size. Chloe was as manipulative as ever, though oddly, it came from a place of love at times.

This week, it was revealed that she's been sending "Dawson's Creek" reunion pleas to her bestie James Van Der Beek for years. The truth is, the cast hates him. When June convinced James to go along with the reunion, the truth came out, and James was crushed. Guest star Busy Philipps explained that it had to do with the bill for a ton of boats when "Creek" wrapped.

But James was obsessed with it now, so he tried to find a way to horn himself into someone else's reunion show. So he accosted Frankie Muniz in a shopping mall, suggesting that Dawson could show up at a "Malcolm in the Middle" reunion. Finally, Chloe had to pull in the big guns: Zack Morris.

Mark-Paul Gosselaar knows a bit about what James was going through, thanks to a little show called "Saved by the Bell," but he also knows it's important to leave the past in the past. "We can?t let that role define us," he told James.

While it was getting real for the guys, June and Chloe were loving seeing two teen idols together, with Chloe hoping they'd kiss.

The new season of "Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23" settles into its new night, Tuesdays at 9:30 p.m. ET on ABC.

BMW Innovations Showcase Unveils ActiveHybrid 3 And 5 Series ...

BMW Group Malaysia today starts its BMW Innovations Showcase at the Pavilion, Kuala Lumpur. The showcase is brandishing the carmaker?s ability to push the boundary of technology in the automotive premium segment by displaying the much awaited BMW Vision ConnectedDrive concept car as well as the ActiveHybrid 3 Series and 5 Series sedans.

Introducing the cars was Dr Gerhard Pils,?Managing Director, BMW Group Malaysia. He emphasized that?constant innovation was at the forefront of the BMW Group?s remarkable success and that the company was determined to work to achieve an even higher benchmark in sustainability, efficiency and driving dynamism.

The futuristic roadster is specially designed for maximum application of the ?BMW ConnectedDrive features, which some are already featured in the current BMW models such as the head-up display. The car is practically a test bed for more technological innovations to come in the future such as advanced driver assistance, real time traffic information and more new technologies for the in-car use of mobile devices. It connects the car, driver and the outside world simultaneously. Colour-coded technology is also used to optimise convenience, infotainment and safety -?Green symbolizes Convenience, Blue represents Infotainment while Red exemplifies Safety.

Another highlight at the showcase is the ActiveHybrid 3 and 5 Series sedans. Exterior-wise, the hybrids do not possess much differences compared to the normal 3 and 5 Series except for the ActiveHybrid badges on the rear bonnet, C-pillars and side sills. The rims are specially designed for the ActiveHybrid models.

Both ActiveHybrid models are powered by the multi-award winning 3.0-litre, inline-six powertrain featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo, High Precision Injection and Valvetronic including Double-VANOS, the same engine used in the 335i and 535i. The engine churns out 306 hp and 400 Nm of torque. In addition to the powerful engine, an electric motor with 55 hp and maximum torque of 210 Nm. 0 to 100 sprint only takes a mere 5.3 seconds (5.9 seconds for the ActiveHybrid 5 Series). Certainly not your average hybrid cars.

Fuel consumption reads at an average of 5.9 ?litres per 100km for the ActiveHybrid 3 and 6.8 litres per 100km for the ActiveHybrid 5 with CO2 emissions of only 139 grams per km and 160 grams per km respectively.

The ActiveHybrid is capable of running in all-electric mode and dynamic mode. Combination of the engine and the electric motor results in extra output at 340 hp and 450 Nm of torque while operating in the all-electric mode means zero emissions at speeds up to 60 km/h for about four kilometres. In urban driving condition, the on-board processor ensures that the car makes full use of the electric motor with the eight-speed transmission providing the power at all times. If sudden power is needed, the eBOOST system can be activated.

Power electronics for the car are connected to the Professional navigation system. The on-board computer calculates route data and uses the data to anticipate how much energy is needed to to reach the desired destination, without sacrificing the efficiency. For instance, the electric motor will be used to support the internal combustion engine while going uphill on mountainous roads. Downhill, the battery will be recharged via the Brake Energy Regeneration system.

Unlike in petrol and diesel variants, the Auto Start/Stop function in the ActiveHybrid models is activated when the vehicle is approaching a stop. The engine will start immediately after the car reaches 60 km/h. And with the ECO PRO mode on, the car ?glides? with the engine switched off at speeds up to 160 km/h. The secret to this is the car uses the stored kinetic energy from the Brake Energy Regeneration system. Zero emissions at 160 km/h? Swell. The Auto Start/Stop function also operates in COMFORT and SPORT modes. These modes are accessible via the Driving Experience Control button on the centre console of the vehicle.

The retail prices (on the road, without insurance, with BMW Service + Repair Inclusive (BS+RI)) for the new BMW ActiveHybrid 3 and BMW ActiveHybrid 5 are RM 538,800.00 and RM 648,800.00 respectively.

BMW Innovations Showcase pushes the Boundaries of Technology in the Automotive Premium Segment
Premium carmaker furthers innovation commitment to Malaysia, unveiling BMW Vision ConnectedDrive Concept car and BMW ActiveHybrid sedans at technology showcase.

Kuala Lumpur, 25 October 2012 ? BMW Group Malaysia today displayed its latest technological offering for the premium automotive industry as the premium carmaker unveiled its much anticipated BMW Vision ConnectedDrive Concept car as well as its BMW ActiveHybrid 3 Series and 5 Series sedans at the BMW Innovations Showcase at the Pavilion Kuala Lumpur.

Introducing the new innovative vehicles from BMW, Dr. Gerhard Pils, Managing Director, BMW Group Malaysia said, ?Since the early 1970s, BMW has been working on the idea of networking vehicles with each other as well as with the outside world in order to realise innovative communication and driver assistance systems for its cars. Since those early days, enormous progress in automotive networking has been made to intelligently link the driver to the car and to the outside world. The BMW Innovations Showcase at The Pavilion Kuala Lumpur is meant to demonstrate to Malaysians the significant achievements in technology the BMW Group has made, and to encourage Malaysians to recognise and explore the extent of opportunities technology can offer us today.?

Dr.Pils added that as the world?s leading premium automaker, constant innovation was at the forefront of the BMW Group?s remarkable success and that the company was determined to work to achieve an even higher benchmark in sustainability, efficiency and driving dynamism.

?Apart from leading to improvements to BMW vehicles, innovation is the catalyst for improvements which leads to significant benefits to society, be it in terms of automotive safety or even economic opportunities.? said Dr. Pils.

BMW Vision Connected Drive ? The future of automotive connectivity

The star display of the BMW Innovations Showcase was the BMW Vision ConnectedDrive Concept Car, a futuristic roadster designed to allow for optimal insights into the display and practical application of future BMW ConnectedDrive features. From advanced driver assistance and real time traffic information to new technologies for the in-car use of mobile devices and more, the BMW Vision ConnectedDrive is the test bed and precursor of technological innovations to come in the near future. Divided into the three areas of safety, infotainment and comfort the fundamental concept of the BMW Vision ConnectedDrive ? the intelligent networking of driver, vehicle and the outside world ? is expressed on four levels: the display and operating concept, an unparalleled light installation, the design of the car itself and the integration of the whole concept into a multimedia experience.

With its revolutionary 2-seater roadster design, the BMW Vision ConnectedDrive supplies the driver with optimised convenience, infotainment and safety. Striking light bands in green, blue and red symbolise the transfer of information from each system to another. A distinctively BMW hood features a stylised opening designed to focus the driver?s attention to the road while also optimising the prioritised flow of information to the driver. For example, the car?s innovative new display and operating concept includes a three-dimensional Head-up Display in the windscreen, a freely programmable instrument cluster for the driver and an additional monitor for the front passenger for optimized practicality and safety.

?The most remarkable fact about the BMW Vision ConnectedDrive is that a majority of its revolutionary features are already available in the BMW models of today courtesy of the BMW ConnectedDrive strategy. Of course, there are other leading features which will be introduced in the future as we at BMW constantly seek out innovations to make our cars even better than ever!? said Dr. Pils.

BMW EfficientDynamics ? Intelligence breeds Efficiency

Also highlighted at the BMW Innovations showcase was the market introduction of the all new BMW Active Hybrid 3 and BMW Active Hybrid 5 cars to Malaysia. Fitted with the most advanced power train technology for hybrid vehicles, BMW?s Active Hybrid vehicles excel in all aspects of hybrid disciplines ? output, fuel efficiency, range, all-electric top speed, acceleration and internal space and luggage capacity; all designed and engineered by BMW to deliver Sheer Driving Pleasure to its Malaysian customers without any compromise.

?The introduction of the all-new BMW ActiveHybrid 3 and BMW ActiveHybrid 5 completes the BMW 3 Series and BMW 5 Series product line-up in Malaysia. Given the Malaysian government?s growing support for Advanced Green technology which we expect will be further enhanced with the upcoming review of the National Automotive Policy, we aim to introduce even more of our Advanced Hybrid models as well as revolutionary Electro-Mobility solutions in the near future.? said Dr.Pils.

At the heart of the new BMW ActiveHybrid models is the multi-award winning six-cylinder in-line petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology power plant featuring a twin-scroll turbocharger, High Precision Injection and Valvetronic variable inlet valve lift control including Double-VANOS, the very same engine featured in the remarkably dynamic BMW 335i and the BMW 535i, providing both cars with a maximum output of 225 kW/306 hp with torque peaking at 400 Nm. In addition to that the BMW ActiveHybrid 3 and BMW ActiveHybrid 5 are further fitted with a 40 kW/55hp electric motor which is capable of delivering a maximum torque of 210 Nm. This allows the BMW ActiveHybrid 3 and BMW ActiveHybrid 5 to deliver performances of 5.3 seconds and 5.9 seconds respectively in the 0-100km/h sprint. The most astounding feature of the BMW ActiveHybrids are of course their remarkably enhanced efficiency, with the BMW ActiveHybrid 3 and BMW ActiveHybrid 5 consuming an average of 5.9 litres per 100km and 6.8 litres per 100km respectively and CO2 emissions of only 139 grams per km and 160 grams per km respectively.

Aside from operating in the all-electric mode a key feature of the BMW ActiveHybrid 3 and BMW ActiveHybrid 5 is the ability to deliver impressively dynamic acceleration by combining the outputs of both its petrol as well as electric power plants. Integrated into the housing of the eight-speed automatic transmission the electric motor enables all-electric driving in urban traffic, and when working in conjunction with the petrol engine provides extra power for acceleration with a combined output of 250 kW/340 hp and 450 Nm of torque. Operating in the all-electric mode the BMW ActiveHybrids are able to deliver zero-emissions while driving at speeds up to 60km/h with a total uninterrupted range of four kilometres. In urban conditions the on-board processor in the BMW ActiveHybrids ensures that the car optimizes the use of the electric motor with the eight-speed automatic transmission providing optimal power flow at all times. In addition, the cars eBOOST system is activated whenever additional power reserves are required, such as during overtaking manoeuvres.

The intelligent energy management system introduced in the all-new BMW ActiveHybrid 3 and BMW ActiveHybrid 5 incorporates the hybrid-specific Auto Start/Stop function, the ECO PRO mode as well as the car?s auxiliary air conditioning, making BMW?s first hybrid models in Malaysia unique in the premium market. The power electronics for the BMW ActiveHybrids are networked with the Professional navigation system which ensures that route data is saved by the on-board computer and are used to anticipate impending energy needs to ensure optimum performance and efficient interaction between the combustion engine and the electric drive on a customer?s regular drive routes. For example, the deployment of the electric motor on mountainous roads will be matched to select performance management data based on the driver?s previous routes. Uphill, maximum use can be made of stored energy to support the petrol engine while on the subsequent downhill portion of the drive the high-performance lithium-ion battery will be recharged via the Brake Energy Regeneration system for maximum efficiency. Even on level terrain, the system anticipates energy use to provide maximum efficiency; if the destination is in an urban area, the high-performance battery is charged sufficiently ahead of arrival to ensure that the final part of the drive can be covered on electrical energy alone.

Unlike in petrol and diesel variants, the Auto Start/Stop function in BMW ActiveHybrid models is activated when the vehicle is approaching a stop, and depending on the charge in the high-performance battery or its acceleration requirement, the engine will restart immediately after a stop or once the vehicle reaches 60km/h. With ECO PRO mode activated, drivers can also experience the vehicle ?gliding? with the internal combustion engine switched off at speeds up to 160km/h. The petrol engine is deactivated during this process, resulting in zero-emissions while the vehicle uses the stored kinetic energy thanks to the Brake Energy Regeneration technology. The Hybrid specific Auto Start/Stop function also operates in COMFORT and SPORT modes at speeds up to 80 km/h. Drivers are able to activate these different driving modes via the Driving Experience Control button on the centre console of the vehicle.

?Our proactive introduction of sustainable and highly advanced green technology alternative vehicles to the Malaysian market has proven to be a key factor of our growing success as it has enabled us to serve a market which is becoming ever increasingly conscious of the need to conserve resources and the environment. The introduction of the BMW ActiveHybrids is set to further enhance our wildly successful BMW EfficientDynamics strategy here in Malaysia which began with the introduction of our range of BMW Advanced Diesel models in 2009, that now comprise around 20% of our total sales volume and is but a taste of even more Advanced Green Technology solutions to be introduced to the market by BMW in the near future,? said Dr. Pils.

The retail prices (on the road, without insurance, with BMW Service + Repair Inclusive (BS+RI)) for the new BMW ActiveHybrid 3 and BMW ActiveHybrid 5 are

    BMW ActiveHybrid 3 ? RM 538,800.00
    BMW ActiveHybrid 5 ? RM 648,800.00

?Advanced Green Technology ? An economic opportunity for Malaysia

During the BMW Innovations Showcase Dr. Pils further highlighted the need for Malaysia to make strong and proactive steps to move the nation?s automotive industry further up the green technology and sustainability chain, both in terms of encouraging the adoption of sustainable alternatives amongst consumers and as a matter of evolving automotive and industrial policies.

He added, ?Malaysia must appreciate that the emerging strengths of the automotive industries in both Indonesia and Thailand are a threat to our regional and global competitiveness as an automotive player. We must be proactive in countering these emerging threats and a key means to achieve this would be to focus the nation?s efforts towards becoming a Regional Automotive Hub for the manufacture and assembly of Advanced Clean and Green Technology throughout the industry supply chain.

While the Malaysian government has begun to provide import and excise duty exemptions for Electric as well as Hybrid vehicles, the framework of existing policies remains restrictive as they are limited to vehicles with engine capacities below 2,000 cc in capacity. BMW Group Malaysia believes that for the full benefits of new and green technologies to be fully appreciated and adopted the exemptions must be extended to all vehicles that utilise such technologies regardless of engine size but with efficiency and emission reductions as its main criteria. This would encourage early adoption by all consumer segments as well as the entire automotive industry supply chain.

Members of the public who are keen to learn more about the BMW Innovation Showcase are welcome to visit the public showcase which will be held at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur from the 23rd to 28th of October.

Rio?s new union to protect black players

iol spt pic Rio Ferdinand oct 24

    AP

Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand warms up prior to the Champions League Group H soccer match against SC Braga at Old Trafford in Manchester.

London - Rio Ferdinand is planning to revolutionise English football with the launch of a breakaway union to protect the interests of black footballers.

Ferdinand, who refused to wear a Kick It Out T-shirt before Manchester United?s clash against Stoke on Saturday, has already joined other high-profile black players in overseeing the first draft of a constitution.

The United defender and his colleagues want to tackle discrimination in all forms and will hold a series of meetings in London over the next few weeks.

The union - which has a working name of The Federation of Black Players but will be open to players from all ethnic backgrounds who share a desire to combat racism in English football - will be self-funded by professionals at every level.

The union?s mission statement is expected to honour the achievements of black footballers and promote unity within the sport at every level, from players to spectators.

The idea, which has been conceived by Ferdinand, is already gathering momentum among black players and has received widespread support.

It will be the first of its kind in this country, but there is a long-established Black Baseball Players Association in the United States.

Ferdinand wants to protect the interests of the current generation of black players and is eager, for instance, to defend the rights of the young players caught up in last week?s traumatic events that marred the England Under 21 game in Serbia.

Although every professional player is entitled to PFA representation, the new union is unlikely to be affiliated with the official body.

That does, however, remain up for discussion, with meetings with the PFA still planned.

But there is a feeling that it should be independent, when one of the issues a number of black players have with the Kick It Out campaign is the fact that it is funded by the Football Association.

There is a good chance Ferdinand would be nominated as the union?s first chairman, although a number of current and retired black players will be invited to occupy executive positions.

The group have been working on a draft constitution for several weeks and, according to sources, the concept is already at the ?advanced planning stage?.

Ferdinand?s relationship with Kick It Out appears to be badly fractured after he was criticised by the pressure group?s chairman, Lord Ouseley, on Monday.

Lord Ouseley repeated his claims that black, multi-millionaire footballers are over-reacting. He said: ?Would Rio tell England where to stick their shirt if picked or does he think the FA has done enough to tackle racism?

Despite Kick It Out?s unwavering support for Anton Ferdinand and his family during his high-profile court case with John Terry, some players refused to support the campaign at the weekend.?

On Monday, Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed that peace talks had taken place between the United manager and his player on Sunday.

After his initial fury over the stance Ferdinand took in refusing to wear the Kick It Out T-shirt, he said the situation had been ?resolved?.

Ferdinand incurred Ferguson?s wrath after refusing to wear a shirt with the message ?one game one community? at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Brother Anton, along with a number of Queens Park Rangers and Everton players, also refused to support the initiative before Sunday?s Barclays Premier League clash at Loftus Road.

Reading striker Jason Roberts, who refused to wear a Kick It Out T-shirt at Anfield on Saturday, is expected to be a significant voice in the new movement.

He was due to attend a Show Racism the Red Card initiative at the Madejski Stadium on Tuesday but the organisation said he is unlikely to do so.

Roberts, who condemned the Kick It Out campaign last week, has already written to the FA with his observations. The Reading striker has raised a number of issues over the FA?s approach to tackling racism.

Lord Ouseley also criticised the FA, who are a funding partner for Kick It Out, during a series of interviews on Monday.

Daytrading, Stock Trading, Investing and Forex Trading ? Explaining ...

They don't blame any person or anything for what's happened to their money. What do successful traders share in common? Do they cry and whinge about losing millions of bucks in the market when that occurs? No, they take responsibility of their actions when trading in the stockmarket. They wish they had made better choices. Most noobs would regret what occurred during the past. Picking the ?gainers? and avoiding the ?losers? is the name of the game. For instance, ?I should have purchased this other stock instead? or ?I shouldn't have listened to that stockbroker.? Each successful investor has a tactic that he sticks to. Warren Buffett knows this idea well, and that made him the second-richest man in the world today. What if you had a technique to tell which stocks are intending to make a murdering in the market? Spot the ?gainers? earlier without depending on brokers or sly insider data. If you should happen to feel assured you can manage your portfolio without trained advice, which can prove pricey I would add, most online agents offer free tools to help you with consumer analysis like historic charts, realtime stock quotes and tutorial videos.

Now would not that give you the benefit easily? What if androids can do all of that for you? These are what automated stock dealing robotic systems do best. If nonetheless, you propose to keep the stock for a longer period like five years or longer, you are going to need to check the performance of the stock monthly to make sure that the company has not sustained substantial losses that would affect the value of your investment. Tracking a firm's performance is vital if you're trading short term by checking charts and graphs. Taking the Supposition out of Trading On The Web brokers could have many convenient tools and services available to their clients, but recall that they're actually only out to earn income from your account with them. There are a large amount of programs available to help map out Fibonacci waves.

I invest fairly conservatively, but my largest gain so far ( on one currency cross ) was over $5000. You can download SpiralTrader for nothing there?s also VTTrader, which my neighbour uses and endorses. Both do miracles, all you've got to do is input 1 or 2 numbers and drag your waves over market graphs, and it shows you the key p.c. levels at which to trade successfully with that fund. It is not complicated, and it isn't wizardry ? it is simply a method to see patterns and identify when they'll repeat. That way it is possible for you to always be assured you are working with the most current materials. Take a little time to appraise what it is that you truly want to gain from such materials.

You need the facility to customise the layouts of charts and graphs too. This will have a huge effect on your profits from trading efforts. That enables you to read it in a format that's satisfactory for you.

AT&T revenue, subscriber growth miss Wall Street view

(Reuters) - AT&T Inc posted third-quarter revenue below Wall Street estimates as it added fewer customers than expected, citing a shortage of the latest Apple Inc iPhone.

The No. 2 U.S. mobile service provider said it had 151,000 net new subscribers in the quarter, compared with the average expectation for 358,000, according to five analysts contacted by Reuters.

Its bigger rival, Verizon Wireless, added 1.5 million subscribers in the quarter.

AT&T said a shortage of the latest iPhone, which went on sale in the last week of the quarter, meant that the vast majority of third-quarter iPhone sales went to existing customers, stunting its growth of new customers.

Slow customer growth likely helped the company post better-than-expected earnings for the quarter as new customers come with a hefty cost for wireless service providers.

AT&T's profit rose to $3.64 billion, or 63 cents per share, from $3.62 billion, or 61 cents per share, and was 3 cents ahead of Wall Street expectations, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

However, revenue fell to $31.46 billion from $31.48 billion and missed the analysts' average estimate of $31.59 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

The company also raised its target for 2012 free cash flow by $2 billion to $18 billion.

Verizon Wireless is a venture of Verizon Communications and Vodafone Group Plc.

Dutch art heist museum says security system in order

ROTTERDAM, The Netherlands (Reuters) - The Dutch art gallery at the center of an audacious heist last week said that the electronic locks on its doors were disarmed before thieves made off with paintings by Picasso, Monet and others worth tens of millions of dollars.

The seven stolen works - which also include a Gauguin, a Lucian Freud and a Meyer de Haan - were on loan from a private collection for a special exhibition at Rotterdam's Kunsthal of impressionism, expressionism, and other modern art movements.

The theft was one of the art world's most dramatic in recent years, and one of the biggest in the Netherlands.

The apparent ease with which the thieves entered and escaped has raised questions about the Kunsthal's security system and whether an insider was involved.

The Kunsthal said in a statement on Monday that the electronic locks on its doors were in working order, but were designed to automatically unbolt shortly after the burglar alarm was set off. After that, only mechanical door locks stood between the intruders and the Kunsthal's treasures.

"The theft on Monday night suggests the intruders forced the lock after the unbolting, presumably quickly," the statement said.

The thieves forced the mechanical lock on an emergency exit at the rear of the ground floor gallery. Police arrived at the scene within five minutes, but the intruders had already gone.

Defending its security installation in the face of speculation, the gallery said an independent inspection of its security apparatus in August had found only that one motion detector was blocked off. It had been immediately repaired.

On Friday, the police released security camera footage which showed the thieves entering through the back door before disappearing from the camera's field of view. Seconds later, they come back into view carrying bulky objects, and leave the same way they entered.

The faces of the thieves cannot be seen clearly on the footage, but police are appealing to the public to come forward if they recognize their bags or clothing. Police say they have already received 60 tips relating to the robbery.

The Kunsthal, in Rotterdam's leafy museum quarter, does not have its own collection.

It had only just opened a new exhibition of works from the private Triton Foundation - collected by the Cordia family, which made its money in shipping and oil - to celebrate its 20th anniversary when the break-in took place during Monday night.

The gallery reopened on Thursday, and the empty spaces previously occupied by the stolen paintings were filled with new works from the Triton collection.

Police appeals for information are posted around the museum park, home to half a dozen museums besides the Kunsthal, which was designed by Rem Koolhaas.

The museum has not said which paintings now hang in place of the stolen works, which included Matisse's "La Liseuse en Blanc et Jaune", Monet's "Waterloo Bridge, London" and "Charing Cross Bridge, London", Gauguin's "Femme devant une fen?tre ouverte", De Haan's "Autoportrait" and Freud's "Woman with Eyes Closed".

But even the absence of Picasso's "T?te d'Arlequin", which was the exhibition's centerpiece, has not dampened interest in the exhibition, which was crowded on Sunday.

"Numbers are way up since the theft," said the cloakroom attendant with a smile. "Disaster tourists."

Cameron on ropes after "catastrophic" week

LONDON (Reuters) - Prime Minister David Cameron is under pressure to reassert his authority over a Conservative Party reeling after a week which saw the resignation of a senior minister and claims of incompetence and elitism at the heart of his government.

After one of the most bruising weeks for the centre-right party since it took power in a coalition in 2010, the Conservatives have slipped further behind their Labour rivals, polls showed on Sunday. The next election is due in 2015.

Cameron will try to regain the initiative on Monday with a speech setting out a tougher stance on crime after a series of policy missteps, U-turns and embarrassments since an unpopular budget in March.

Veteran Conservative member of the Lords Norman Tebbit, one of former prime minister Margaret Thatcher's closest allies, attacked what he called "this dog of a government".

"The abiding sin of the government is not that some ministers are rich, but that it seems unable to manage its affairs competently," he told the Observer newspaper.

Education Secretary Michael Gove dismissed headlines talking of "Meltdown" and a "Catastrophic Week" as the passing "froth of political life" that affects all leaders, including ex-Labour prime minister Tony Blair, who won three elections.

"I remember reading about Tony Blair's worst week ever. No matter how many of these worst weeks he had, no matter how many apparently tough headlines there were, he came surging through with landslide majorities because the fundamental policy decisions...mattered more than the reporting of personality issues," he told Sky News.

Voters are more interested in the improving economy and falling hospital waiting lists, he added. Figures on Thursday are likely to show Britain has emerged from recession.

    MINISTER RESIGNS

Cameron's judgement was questioned after he backed Andrew Mitchell, the minister accused a month ago of swearing at police and calling them "plebs", a class-laden word for working people.

Opponents seized on the affair as evidence senior Conservatives form an arrogant elite, adrift from ordinary Britons hit by the recession.

Mitchell finally resigned on Friday, still denying he had used the word "pleb", but apologising for swearing at police who refused to open the main security gates at Cameron's Downing Street office to allow him through on his bicycle. That did not end the debate about Conservatives and class.

On Friday, Chancellor George Osborne sat in a first class train carriage with a second class ticket. Aides said he paid for an upgrade, but the story still dominated headlines and fuelled a perception the Conservatives are out of touch.

Opponents accused Cameron of incompetence over a botched rail franchise process on October 3 [ID:nL6E8L3218] and an unclear announcement on energy bills on Wednesday.

A Sunday Mirror poll put the Conservatives down two points from last month on 33 percent, behind Labour, up three on 41 percent. A second poll had Cameron's party on 30 percent, down five percent in 10 days, with Labour on 43 percent.

Labour said Cameron's crime pledges were designed to help him win back support from disgruntled members of parliament.

"This is empty rhetoric from a weak prime minister who is pandering to the backbenchers that forced out Andrew Mitchell," said Labour justice spokesman Sadiq Khan.
