COMMPER 2012 is a workshop in conjunction with The European Conference on Machine Learning and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases (ECML PKDD), which will take place in Bristol, UK from September 24th to 28th, 2012.

"People recommenders, the second main topic of this workshop, deal with the problem of finding meaningful relationships among people or organizations. In online social networks, relationships can be friends on Facebook, professional contacts on LinkedIn, dates on an online dating site, jobs or workers on employment websites, or people to follow on Twitter. The nature of these domains makes people-to-people recommender systems to be significantly different from traditional item-to-people recommenders. One basic difference in the people recommender domain is the benefit or requirement of reciprocal relationships. Another difference between these domains is that people recommenders are likely to have rich user profiles available. The goal of this workshop is to build a community around people recommenders and instigate discussion about this emerging area of research for recommender systems. With this workshop, we want to reach out to research done in both academia and industry. "

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) -- Former Indiana coach and player Lou Watson has died at the age of 88.

Scott Funeral Home in Jeffersonville, where Watson will be buried, said he died Thursday in Fairfax, Va.

Watson played for the Hoosiers from 1947-50, becoming its leading scorer at the time, and was first-team All-Big Ten in 1950. He was Indiana's head coach from 1966-71, guiding the Hoosiers to a Big Ten co-championship in 1967, and finishing with a 62-60 record. He became a special assistant to the athletic director in 1971, when Indiana hired Bob Knight as coach.

Watson retired in 1987.

SAfrica: Zuma seeks ban on artwork; vandals hit

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? South African President Jacob Zuma and his African National Congress sought a court order Tuesday to have a painting depicting the president's genitals removed from an art gallery but two men took matters into their own hands by defacing the portrait with gobs of paint.

The case pits freedom of expression against the right to dignity, both guaranteed by South Africa's constitution. The painting by Brett Murray went on display in a Johannesburg gallery this month and came to the ANC's attention a week later, after local media reported it had been sold. Zuma, who has a reputation for promiscuity, took the depiction very personally and compared himself somewhat ironically to a rape victim. Zuma himself was put on trial for rape, and acquitted, in 2006.

"The portrayal has ridiculed and caused me humiliation and indignity," Zuma contended in an affidavit filed Tuesday with the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg.

Presiding over the hearing in a courtroom a few kilometers (miles) from the gallery, Judge Fayeeza Kathree-Setiloane said the full three-judge bench should hear the case because the national interest and constitutional issues are at stake. She said the hearing would recommence on Thursday.

Zuma and the ANC sought to have the painting, titled "The Spear," removed from the Goodman Gallery and to stop the newspaper City Press from displaying a photo of it on its website.

At about the time the hearing was under way, two men wielding cans of red and black paint calmly walked up to the painting hanging on a gallery wall and took turns defacing it.

"Now it's completely and utterly destroyed," said Iman Rappetti, a reporter for a South African TV channel who happened to be on the scene at the time as her camera rolled.

Her channel showed a man in a tweed jacket painting a red X over the president's genital area and then his face. Next, a man in a hoodie used his hand to smear black paint over the president's face and down the painting. The men were finally detained by gallery staff ? the second man was head-butted and thrown to the ground before he was handcuffed ? and police took them away.

Rappetti said she initially thought the first man was part of a performance art piece, and said staff at the gallery was slow to react.

The Goodman had said in a statement a day earlier that it was stepping up security, and gallery visitors said Tuesday their bags were searched as they went. After the vandalism the gallery was closed as a throng of reporters and onlookers gathered outside.

In a statement late Tuesday, the gallery said the painting had been moved to a safe and undisclosed place, and that the gallery would remain closed indefinitely.

"The painting has generated a debate that clearly engages with important legal and constitutional issues," gallery owner Liza Essers said in the statement. "This is over and above questions of political power, which formed part of its original dialogue.

"The extent of the rage has astonished me and upset me very much. I furthermore never imagined that this debate would transform into harmful physical action."

Murray, the artist, through the gallery, has refused to comment.

In a statement on the defacement, the ANC said it "cannot condone any action that is not legal." The party then inserted race into the debate by noting that the first man accused of defacing the painting, who is white, was arrested without incident, while the second man, who is black, was shown in a tussle with gallery guards. The ANC compared that to apartheid South Africa, when blacks were "treated differently from their white counterparts?"

Witnesses, though, said they did not at first understand what the first man was doing, and then he quietly moved aside and did not resist when gallery security detained him. The guards tried to stop the second man from defacing the painting, and he resisted, witnesses said.

Police said the two unidentified men, aged 58 and 25, are expected to appear in a magistrate's court on Thursday on a charge of malicious damage to property.

After the painting was defaced, a third man spray-painted the first three letters of the word "respect" on a wall near the gallery's front gate before he was taken away by police. He shouted that the gallery had shown the president disrespect.

Back at the courthouse, more than 100 pro-Zuma protesters gathered outside. Donavan Cloete held a black, green and gold ANC flag and wore a T-shirt with the slogan: "President Zuma has a right to human dignity and privacy."

"The artist has got his own views on the political situation. He has a right to express himself," Cloete said. "On the other hand, there's got to be a line drawn as to what constitutes satire and what constitutes insult."

But Sophia Morren, a ceramicist who was in the gallery with her daughter when the painting was defaced, said Zuma had shown little respect for himself. She referred to Zuma's six marriages ? he currently has four wives, his 21 children, and his acknowledgment in 2010 that he fathered a child that year with a woman who was not among his wives.

"He's famous for all his women, all his children. I get exactly what the artist is saying," Morren said. "Zuma shouldn't be complaining. Really."

She added she knew Murray had been celebrated for anti-apartheid art work in the past.

"Why is it good then and it is not good now?" she said of Murray's work. "You start proscribing to artists what they can and cannot paint, and then we are lost."

Zuma was acquitted of rape in May 2006 in the country's most politically charged trial since the end of apartheid. Trial testimony had raised questions about Zuma's attitude toward women and whether ultimately he had the judgment to govern. His testimony about having unprotected consensual sex with an HIV-positive AIDS activist demonstrated an amazing ignorance about HIV transmission by a man who once headed South Africa's campaign against the virus.

In his affidavit filed Tuesday, Zuma said he rejected suggestions that speaking out about the painting would "exacerbate the pain I am feeling about the image being publicized widely.

"This argument is similar to suggesting that, inter alia, victims of rape should not complain about the violations they have suffered because doing so will lead to publication of their ordeal. It is suggested therefore that such victims should keep quiet in order to limit public knowledge of their rights."

The painting is part of an exhibition of Murray's sculptures and paintings called "Hail to the Thief II." The ANC denounces the show as an "abuse of freedom of artistic expression."

Family Tree RV Franchise Slates June Meeting | RV Business

The organizer of Family Tree RV Franchise Brand Management Inc. expects as many as 120 RV dealers to attend a June 22 meeting at Shabbona Creek RV in the northern Illinois community of Atkinson to explain how the franchise group will operate.

?At least, that?s what we are planning for,? said Tom Enyeart, owner of Shabbona Creek RV and head of Family Tree RV. ?We?re going to have a full house.?

Earlier, Enyeart said he had solicited some 400 RV dealers to join the fledgling franchise group for a buy-in of $49,900. Enyeart said he has commitments from 35 dealers to join the franchise group, but needs a minimum of 50 to get organized.

?A dealer that does not receive an invite can always call and see if they can be added to the list,? he said. ?At the end of the day, we will be the most recognized dealer group in the country.?

Enyeart, who has been attempting to organize Family Tree RV for over a year, said most of the June 22 gathering will be a question-and-answer session during which he and his ?legal team? will answer questions.

?There will be a couple of short seminars on advertising practices and how to make effective commercials,? Enyeart said.

Invitations to attend the session were sent out Thursday (May 17).

Landmark deal will end the Afghan War for the West

CHICAGO (Reuters) - NATO set an "irreversible" course out of Afghanistan on Monday but President Barack Obama admitted the Western alliance's plan to end the deeply unpopular war in 2014 was fraught with peril.

A landmark NATO summit in Chicago endorsed an exit strategy that calls for handing control of Afghanistan to its own security forces by the middle of next year but left questions unanswered about how to prevent a slide into chaos and a Taliban resurgence after allied troops are gone.

The two-day meeting of the 28-nation military bloc marked a major milestone in a war sparked by the September 11 attacks that has spanned three U.S. presidential terms and even outlasted al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

Obama and NATO partners sought to show their war-weary voters the end is in sight in Afghanistan - a conflict that has strained Western budgets as well as patience - while at the same time trying to reassure Afghans that they will not be abandoned.

"We are now unified behind a plan to responsibly wind down the war in Afghanistan," Obama told the summit's closing news conference.

"Are there risks involved? Absolutely," Obama conceded, saying the Taliban remained a "robust enemy" and NATO's gains on the ground were fragile. But he insisted the overall strategy, which offered few specifics on the pace of withdrawal, was sound.

Even in NATO's outward show of solidarity, it was clear that differences remained after nearly 11 years of military engagement that has failed to defeat Taliban Islamists.

Alliance leaders acquiesced to new French President Francois Hollande's insistence on sticking to his campaign pledge to withdraw France's 3,400 troops by December 31, two years ahead of NATO's timetable. While there was no sign this would send other allies rushing for the exits, leaders could face pressures at home.

But despite a face-to-face encounter with Pakistan's president, Obama failed to resolve a dispute overhanging the summit - Islamabad's refusal to reopen supply routes to NATO in Afghanistan seen as vital to an orderly withdrawal.

The summit's final communiqu? ratified plans for the NATO-led army to hand over command of all combat missions to Afghan forces by the middle of 2013 and for the withdrawal of most of the 130,000 foreign troops by the end of the following year.

The statement deemed it an "irreversible" transition to full security responsibility for fledgling Afghan troops, and said NATO's mission in 2014 would shift to a training and advisory role. "This will not be a combat mission," it said.

Doubts remain, however, whether Afghan forces will have the capability to stand up against a still-potent Taliban insurgency and instill stability.

Obama, who has steadily narrowed his goals in Afghanistan since taking office in 2009, said: "We can achieve a stable Afghanistan that won't be perfect ... and we can begin rebuilding America."

With an eye to the November presidential election, Obama has made winding down the decade-old Afghan war a campaign theme his aides hope will help ease voter anguish over a slow U.S. economic recovery and stubbornly high unemployment.

For NATO as a whole, the long, messy Afghan conflict seems to have created its own "Vietnam Syndrome," causing it to shy away from deep on-the-ground engagement in faraway places. NATO already limited itself to an air assault in Libya last year, and has shown no stomach for military intervention in Syria.

"GRAVEYARD OF EMPIRES"

The NATO plan offered no guarantees on the future of Afghanistan, known over the centuries as the "graveyard of empires" for its ill treatment of foreign armies.

While Obama insisted Afghanistan should never again be used to plot attacks on other nations, a senior British official said: "It is unrealistic to assume that Afghanistan is going to be completely secure and there is no possibility of a terrorist threat re-emerging."

Underscoring the prospects that other allies may be tempted to follow France's lead and depart early, New Zealand announced on Monday it would pull out its 140 troops in 2013, a year ahead of schedule, saying their work was done.

At the summit's end, Obama spoke of "diligent progress" but no breakthrough with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari on the supply lines issue after they talked briefly on the sidelines.

Frustrated NATO officials have also been trying to persuade Pakistan to reopen its territory to NATO supplies, which Islamabad has blocked since NATO forces killed 24 Pakistani soldiers in a cross-border incident last year.

With Europe's debt crisis hanging over the summit and many member-governments limited by austerity budgets, Obama also struggled to pin down final commitments from allies for the $4.1 billion a year needed to support Afghan security forces.

The funding - which will undergird Afghan's capacity to fight the Taliban and is considered vital to a smooth NATO departure - was not thought to have been fully realized at the summit. But alliance officials believe it will eventually be provided.

NATO diplomats said thinking had moved to the logistical challenge of getting a large multinational army out of the Afghan mountains and deserts and back home safely.

As Zardari, an uneasy U.S. partner, sat with other leaders around a circular table, Obama pointedly thanked Afghanistan's neighbors who have allowed expanded shipments of war supplies since Pakistan closed off ground routes to NATO truck convoys.

NATO is seeking to compensate in the meantime with a framework agreement with Afghanistan's northern neighbor, Uzbekistan, to allow "reverse transit" of NATO supplies from Afghanistan.

Friction remains between NATO and Pakistan over Taliban guerrillas who are still finding sanctuary in Pakistan, in spite of Islamabad's professed support for the alliance's mission.

Long-term funding for the Afghan police and army, which has steadily improved its performance but is still plagued by problems, was also a focus of the summit.

The United States is unwilling to foot the entire annual bill to maintain the forces after 2014 and has been seeking pledges from allies of $1.3 billion, despite austerity measures brought on by Europe's financial crisis.

Many of the leaders in Chicago came directly from a Camp David summit of the Group of Eight wealthy nations that vowed to take all necessary measures to contain the euro-zone contagion.

Afghan funding commitments so far include $100 million annually from Britain, $120 million from Italy, $110 million from Canada, $100 million from Australia and $20 million from Turkey. Zardari told a NATO partners meeting Pakistan would also contribute $20 million.

Obama has sought to dispel Americans' concerns that shaky allies will leave U.S. troops to finish the fight alone.

Despite pressure from some NATO members to reconsider, Holland vowed to hold to his election pledge to withdraw French troops by the year's end, which helped the Socialist leader win the presidency this month.

A French defense official said the United States appeared to be asking France for more financing to offset Paris' decision to exit early. "The Americans are asking for between $200-$250 million," the official said. "It's a way of compensating."
